Essay title:

Do Live Broadcasts Ruin The ‘Magic’ Of Theatre?

Firstly, I have identified the key words and phrases to use when you are looking for sources to cite in my essay – ‘live broadcast’, ‘magic of theatre’.  I need to research these to help me understand them before I can go on to answer the essay question.

I created this spider diagram to record my ideas:

Using the spider diagram as a starting point, I then went on to research my essay.  I spent most of my time on this unit reading and researching my subject and I kept referring back to the sources throughout the essay.

The essay plan is as follows:

Introduction - The introduction sets the tone for an essay and should act as a clear guide to your reader.

Paragraph 1 – 3 make up the introduction. It introduces the concept of theatre and how the magic of theatre is experienced by people.  It also introduces the alternatives to sitting in a theatre to see a performance.

Main Body - Within the main body you develop your argument and line of reasoning through presenting and discussing your evidence.

I will use the PEEL paragraph approach to help me with the main body of the essay.

Paragraph 4 - 8 presents my first main point.  It is the argument that you need to be in a theatre setting to experience the magic of theatre.  I have 4 pieces of evidence to support this.

Paragraph 9 - 12 contains my second point.  It talks about what live broadcasters are doing to bring the magic of theatre beyond the theatre walls.  It talks about the use of camera techniques being used to enhance live theatre broadcasts. It includes some evidence from a large report about digital theatre.

Paragraph 13 -16 changes the direction of the essay and brings in financial implications of live broadcasts and the impact of COVID-19.

Conclusion - the conclusion is the most important part of your essay, and it is also the simplest.

Paragraph 17-18 rounds up my findings.  It acknowledges the fact that the subject has been discussed many times but still there is still no clear answer one way or the other.  It suggests a change in what is thought to be liveness within theatre.

I have used the Harvard referencing system in my essay.

To help me manage my time and to fit unit 12 in with other course work I have created a timetable. I allowed 6 weeks to arrive at the 1st draft although the submission date is not until a week after I had planned to finish.  This would give me some wiggle room if needed.
